Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect with friends in 3D immersive digital experiences– all created by our global community of developers and creators.
At Roblox, we’re building the tools and platform that empower our community to bring any experience that they can imagine to life. Our vision is to reimagine the way people come together, from anywhere in the world, and on any device. We’re on a mission to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, and looking for amazing talent to help us get there.
A career at Roblox means you’ll be working to shape the future of human interaction, solving unique technical challenges at scale, and helping to create safer, more civil shared experiences for everyone.
The Team
The Avatar Team is at the heart of the Roblox experience. The Roblox Avatar defines the identity of every player and is a core pillar of the metaverse. Within this group, the Avatar Platform Core team ensures that these foundational avatar components are high-quality, performant, and reliable at scale. As our User-Generated Content (UGC) ecosystem rapidly expands, we face unique technical challenges in managing, processing, and validating millions of 3D assets to maintain platform integrity.
The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer for UGC Validation, you will spearhead engineering initiatives to programmatically process, evaluate, and enhance large-scale 3D datasets uploaded to the Roblox marketplace. This role is not about traditional QA or manual testing; rather, it is highly technical, focusing on applying deep knowledge of 3D graphics, geometry, rendering, and animation to build robust systems that elevate 3D asset quality.
You will leverage your expertise in rendering pipelines, rigging, and 3D data manipulation to architect pipelines that quantitatively enforce platform standards. By identifying complex topological anomalies, detecting sophisticated rendering exploits, and programmatically analyzing mesh and animation data, you'll ensure our marketplace remains safe, highly performant, and visually stunning for hundreds of millions of users.
You Will:
- Process Large-Scale 3D Datasets: Architect, scale, and optimize sophisticated data pipelines capable of analyzing and transforming massive volumes of user-generated 3D assets (meshes, textures, rigs, and animations) with high efficiency.
- Detect Artifacts and Exploits: Develop programmatic, graphics-driven solutions to identify geometry-based exploits, malicious topologies, rendering hacks, and visual artifacts before they can impact the platform.
- Elevate 3D Asset Quality: Create automated engineering solutions that evaluate and improve the structural and visual quality of incoming UGC assets, ensuring optimal rendering performance and avatar schema compliance across all supported devices.
- Apply 3D Graphics Expertise: Utilize deep knowledge of computational geometry, rendering principles, skinning, and animation to define and solve complex validation constraints.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Serve as the core technical expert in geometric processing, working closely with machine learning, engine, and product teams to integrate highly precise asset processing techniques into the broader avatar ecosystem.
You Have:
- Education: A BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience).
- Expert 3D Graphics & Math Foundation: Exceptional mastery of 3D math (linear algebra, computational geometry) and deep familiarity with 3D graphics concepts, including rendering pipelines, shading, and lighting.
- Geometric Processing Expertise: Strong hands-on experience manipulating, analyzing, and optimizing 3D data, including complex meshes, topology, UVs, and vertex structures.
- Animation & Rigging Knowledge: Solid understanding of 3D animation principles, rigging structures, skinning weights, and skeletal hierarchies.
- Software Engineering Excellence: Strong programming skills in C++, Luau, Python, or similar production languages, with a proven track record in system optimization, data pipelining, and architecting scalable software for massive datasets.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Hands-on experience developing or optimizing features for runtime game engines.
- Experience with automated 3D asset optimization (e.g., decimation, LOD generation) or procedural geometry.
- Familiarity with applying machine learning algorithms to 3D asset processing.
